This piece was originally painted in October of 2024. I used a reference photo from a family trip to the Metolius River and Camp Sherman area in October of 2021. At the time, I had a 9 month old, and we went for the smallest of hikes along the river. This portion of the river has less foot traffic, and shortly into the hike, the river bank opposite to the trail has a spring gushing from the side of the steep hill that juts up from the river basin. This particular day, the golden fall light was hitting the water so perfectly that the illumination created a gem-like effect in the crystal clear, glacier blue water. It looked just like a swirling, moving sapphire in the light. It is still one of the most beautiful moments I’ve experienced at this river, so I made this piece to capture and showcase the vibrant color, illumination, and fractals in the water.
